SerendipiTea is a family-run, New York-based specialty tea company that sources tea and botanicals from small gardens all over the world: lemon myrtle, honey bush and roibous from South Africa, yerba matte from South America. What makes specialty tea different (and pricier) than grocery store varieties is that these plants are hand-harvested every 15-30 days, just the top two leaves and the bud. “So people don’t realize it’s actually a very renewable agricultural product because a lot of the plants are like 50, 60 years old, and they’re just constantly pruning them,” explained co-owner Chris Villano, who left the restaurant industry to join his sister in running the company. Packaging is backyard-compostable, and the company has invested in organic certification since its founding 31 years ago. The spicy assortment of six masala chai blends come in refillable tins arrayed in a handsome, reusable wooden box. Each tin makes about 10 cups of tea.
